Me Me Me Monday (7)

Hi all! Good news and bad news this weekend! :D Good news: I watched an absolutely amazing film that totally exceeded my expectations. Bad news: my tablet may or may not be broken. If the latter is true, I might be dragged off by angry authors demanding already-ridiculously late book reviews.

Eventful weekend. As you can tell. ;)

Currently Watching...

... Coraline! I was chatting with my friend yesterday when she showed me some art she did based off of the characters in this film. After I admitted that I hadn't seen it yet, she then proceeded to drag me to her house and force me to watch it with her. And can I just say: WOW. I was pretty much blown away. I had no idea that it was actually animated through stop-motion. All 100 minutes of it. I mean - just imagine how much dedication that must have taken. Not to mention, the characters were so much fun (I loved Coraline herself, in particular), and the plotline was full of fun twists and turns with just the right amount of horror. I'd highly recommend this film - I've added the book it was based on to my TBR list (it's by Neil Gaiman, and why am I even surprised? He's basically just a literary genius) - I can't wait to read it. :D

Currently Reading...

... The Beekeeper's Apprentice, by Laurie R. King. As you guys know, I love, love, love Sherlock Holmes adaptations, and this is another one. It's the story of a young girl, Mary Russell, who meets a retired Holmes and basically bowls him over as she meets and (gasp!) maybe even exceeds his own intelligence. I'm not entirely sure what to think of this so far - while I do like the idea, Mary herself, who narrates the book, seems a bit pretentious. She immediately looks down on Watson and basically spends every moment talking about him impressing upon the reader how slow and bumbling he is. (I, as a huge fan of poor Watson, object to that.) Plus, Holmes himself seems almost mellow, rather than the sharp-tongued, witty detective we all know and love. So I don't know - I'll stick with it, as I haven't even gotten to the actual mystery-solving part yet... hopefully it'll get better once it reaches that point.

Currently Writing...

... Frozen Hearts and its sequel! There are some lovely articles on writing that I've enjoyed reading, particularly centred around character. So I'm really working on trying to convey Rosalyn and Chase's characters in FH, and in the sequel I'm still at the point where I'm just getting to know the characters myself. I've been writing random scenes that most likely won't even make the book, exploring the characters' interactions with each other, their magic (yaaaay Wizards!), and the world around them. Plus, I've noticed that some of the rules of magic have changed from FH to the sequel (?????). So I've been rewriting those as well! Overall, lots of fun - I haven't finished with the final beta's comments yet, but I'll let you guys know when that occurs. :D

Currently Listening To...

... A Sky Full of Stars, by Coldplay. Coldplay is my absolute favourite band and I've basically just been marathoning their new (!) album Ghost Stories, which, by the way, is beautiful and amazing and everybody should go buy it. ;) A Sky Full of Stars is one of my favourites on the record - they're experimenting with new styles and genres, which is always wonderful, and I really like how this one turned out. Check it out below!

Random Updates...

That bad news I mentioned above: my Galaxy is currently out of order, which is kind of A REALLY REALLY BAD THING since that's where I keep all the notes for the books I review for YA Asylum. I haven't actually been reviewing any books - author-requested or otherwise - since, as you guys will remember, my wifi was slightly spotty in the US. :P But I did have notes for at least five reviews and I told myself that I would post the reviews a soon as I got back... except then my Galaxy conked out and refused to charge. Not sure if it's a problem with my charger or whether the actual tablet is dead or what, but I'm hoping I can figure out a way to fix it ASAP (or at least before the hordes of angry authors with torches and pitchforks start banging on my door demanding their reviews!). Nevertheless, if I suddenly disappear and stop posting... you'll know why. ;)

How was your weekend, everybody? Anything exciting happen? Let me know in the comments!

love, Topaz
